Relationships are a fundamental part of our lives and can be the driving force behind almost everything we do. However, sometimes it can be difficult to determine if your relationship is healthy and headed in the right direction for the long haul. Registered psychotherapist Natacha Duke, MA, RP shares some tell-tale signs that you’re in it for the long run and some checks and balances to help reassure that this is the case.
Intimate relationships involve feelings of closeness, sexual intimacy and a deep emotional connection. They can be a source of happiness and well-being as they create a feeling of belonging. However, intimate relationships can also be challenging because they often come with high expectations of commitment and intimacy, making them vulnerable to a range of stressors.
Mutually beneficial relationships can be a great source of social support and are often characterized by shared values or interests, such as a group committed to a cause. They are especially important during times of celebration or adversity, when they can offer support and a sense of belonging.
Casual acquaintances can also be important sources of support and a sense of connectedness, but these relationships don’t require an intense bond or commitment. They can simply be someone you pass in the halls and say “hello” to. In contrast, romantic relationships can be deeply fulfilling, as they provide a chance to open our hearts to someone else and connect on a very personal level.
