The Benefits of Playing a Team Sport

A team sport is an activity that involves two or more teams competing against each other. The athletes are required to perform repeated skilful actions and maximal or near-maximal efforts interspersed with short recovery intervals (consisting of rest or low-intensity activity) over a sustained period of time. It requires a combination of specific physical capacities (eg, agility, endurance, speed, strength) which can be improved through training.

Team sports can teach kids the value of teamwork. They help kids learn how to put their differences aside for the good of the group, whether it be on a soccer field or in a classroom. In addition, they can develop a sense of community that teaches them how to support and motivate others — skills that can be applied to all areas of their lives.

Playing a team sport also improves communication skills, both spoken and unspoken. Whether they’re listening to a locker room pep talk or debating with a teammate, they must be able to communicate their thoughts and ideas. And because so much of communication is non-verbal, they’ll also hone their ability to read body language and interpret facial expressions.

It also teaches them to manage their time wisely, as they’ll likely need to balance school, homework, and practice. Kids can then apply this lesson to their work life when they’re juggling multiple responsibilities in the office or in their own careers.
