The Benefits of Team Sport

Team sport is a sport where the result of a competition or game depends on the collective performance of all members of a team. Some examples of team sports include baseball, basketball, soccer, hockey and cricket.

In addition to fostering teamwork, team sports help players develop social skills that can be applied off the field. For example, team athletes learn to manage time efficiently by setting and achieving goals that are often highly ambitious and demanding. They also learn how to collaborate and communicate effectively, both verbally and non-verbally. These are important life skills that can be used in work, school and other activities, including community projects.

Athletes are also able to understand how their efforts affect the entire team, and they become less self-centered as they realize that they can contribute to the success of their teammates, even when their talents won’t allow them to be star athletes. They can appreciate the benefits of a win, but they can also share the pain of a loss and support one another in the aftermath.

Encourage your team to build their bonds outside of the athletic arena by volunteering together or organizing a charitable fundraiser, like a car wash drive for a local charity. These are fun and rewarding ways to make connections that can last well after the final whistle blows. You can also try a group activity like blindfolded partner obstacle course, or tag, where the entire team is placed in a circle and must pass a ball to each other without being touched.
