Why Kids Should Get Involved in Team Sports

Team sport is any sports activity in which teammates facilitate the movement of a ball or similar object in accordance with a set of rules to score points. The definition of “team sport” excludes individual sports (like wrestling, tennis and golf), motorsports and combat sports (like boxing, mixed martial arts, and judo).

Getting kids involved in team sports is a great way to keep them active. It will also teach them that it’s important to stay healthy and that exercise is fun. It will also give them a reason to spend less time on their computers and televisions.

In team sports, players are surrounded by a supportive community. They learn to build positive social relationships and they develop their communication skills. They’re able to express their needs, hopes and concerns to coaches and teammates, and they receive feedback from those same people. These are all essential soft skills that will be helpful in their adult lives.

Team members are also able to show respect for authority figures like coaches and captains, even when they disagree with them. This is a valuable life lesson and one that will benefit them in the future when they have to work with different types of individuals on their jobs or in their personal lives. They’ll be able to recognize different perspectives and find common ground. They’ll know that sometimes it is necessary to accept defeat, but that they should never lose sight of their goals.
